इस महाविद्यालय की स्थापना वर्ष 1957 में हुई थी। यह तब स्नातकोत्तर बुनियादी प्रशिक्षण महाविद्यालय (Post Graduate Basic Training College) के नाम से जाना जाता था। यह मध्यप्रदेश के प्राचीनतम महाविद्यालयों में से एक है।

This institute was started in year 1957. Firstly it was named as Post Graduate Basic Training (P. G. B. T.) College. In the year 1975 it was renamed as Govt. College of Education. “Shaskiya Snatkottar Shiksha Mahavidyalaya”. It is one of the few colleges where Post Graduate (M. Ed.) classes are running since beginning. The vision Government College of Teacher Education Ujjain is to be the leading centre of learning and innovation in emerging areas of business and management education.
